The examples we’ve observed demonstrate a faint ‘X8’ over-stamp to the left of serial number. Produced in the late 1960’s, this is the earliest known variety of 1oz Engelhard production bar. There are surely a few more we haven’t encountered yet, and we welcome collectors to share any new discoveries. Unlike the 1996 US Silver Eagle, a meaningful percentage of these 1oz Engelhard bars were melted during the 1979/1980 silver spike.
